Dear Teacher, Department Head, Curriculum Coordinator,

There is new GPS curriculum for educators and their students. Written for teachers, “by teachers.”  It is experiential and you become a facilitator!

This letter and all generic curriculum references (subject connections) can be found on the http://greencheckgps.ca website under the Curriculum tab.  Please email the link to colleagues under the Subject heading:  New GPS Curriculum for Teachers – resources and programs.  As a colleague of yours this would be appreciated.

The National GPS Certification Program has developed a comprehensive Global Positioning System Curriculum based on expectations and outcomes found in most education curricula.  It’s suitable for intermediate, senior and post secondary applications.

Suitable for weeks of in/out class activities.

The National GPS Certification Program curriculum focuses on “the relationship between the map, the compass and the GPS unit.” The curriculum package includes:

·        Lesson Plans with timing and strategies

·        GPS Manual and DVD –‘What do those numbers mean anyway?’ – content resource

·        The “toolkit” CD with all graphics and a background power point presentation

·        Sample, learning topographical map for teaching and evaluation purpose

·        Two, comprehensive tests– with competencies and “how to…”

·        Resource list

·        A certification process for secondary and post secondary students

GPS is becoming a needed employment skill, all part of creating and gathering applicable spatial information.  This curriculum highlights and promotes the content/knowledge, skills and attitudes required in the teaching and learning of GPS technology.

Included with this letter is an overview of the National GPS Certification Program with letters of reference.  Take a look on the website http://greencheckgps.ca.  This is a program of the Canadian Ecology Centre (CEC) and its Foundation.  The CEC is incorporated as a national, non-profit, with charitable, educational status. Thanks to EJLB Foundation for their assistance in the development of this curriculum.

What can the National GPS Certification Program do for you and your students?

We can send you:

‘What do those numbers mean anyway?’ – Manual and DVD

The complete curriculum package for teachers in French and English.

Or deliver programs

For teachers, take an introductory participants’ GPS program with an additional instructor’s day – “the how to teach GPS” – develop your own skills and knowledge.  YOU THEN CERTIFY YOUR OWN STUDENTS!

We’re available and mobile.  The above can be delivered to your class(es) within your school district, board or zone through the National GPS Certification Program's network of instructors – see the http://greencheckgps.ca – instructors tab – a great PD day. Available in French or English.

Ongoing assistance with the delivery of the program; especially how to acquire GPS units for your students
