The National GPS Certification Program offers three levels of certifications…see the Letters tab for institutions and organizations that endorse or support the accreditation in their programs.
These certifications are available to participants and instructors (these are the “how to” teach/instruct sessions). All levels have a competency test or project. The general standards and test/project are included with sample outcomes (sse the links). Most sessions are 1 day or more sessions depending on the level, number of participants and needs. There are instructors across the country (not all are certified in delivering all levels). These are becoming sought-after accreditations for Professional Development, the inclusion within academic programs and for Safety Programs and Emergency Plans.
Level 1 - ‘GPS Foundations’ - “What do those numbers mean anyway?’ - the relationship between the map, the compass and the GPS unit. The continuum of GPS familiarity flows from basic to more complex, from knowledge/content through to application. This is an experiential, “hands-on” opportunity with the GPS unit. The resource is the manual and DVD ‘What do those numbers mean anyway.’
Level 2 - ‘Extending Your GPS Experience’ – using a mapping software, creating applicable digital files with spatial data and imagery. This extends the “capture” of data in the field and bringing it all together in a mapping environment. The resource includes a CD of content in Power Point format.
Level 3 – ‘Getting to First Base with GIS’ – “Everyone and everything” will become part of a Geographic Information System (GIS). This allows the participant to bring GPS data into the GIS environment. Also, basic queries are covered related to the spatial layers of data. This is a foundations perspective for those considering embracing GIS from a “users” or management perspective. The resource includes Power Point format and the utilization of the ESRI – ArcGIS software (site licence).
