GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (referenced from the House of Commons in Hansard)

Mr. Anthony Rota (Nipissing-Temiskaming, Lib.): Mr. Speaker, a new instructional manual and DVD developed in my riding wiII help solve the learning dilemma for many global positioning system users.

A book entitled, What Do Those Numbers Mean Anyway?, written by BiII Steer, has recently been published by the Canadian Ecology Centre Foundation. The visual and written content explains the relationship between the map, the compass and the GPS unit. According to Ken WaIIer, a professor at Nipissing University in North Bay, there is a real need to have consumers and those working in rural situations properly trained to understand these basics.

This book wiII serve to educate paramedics, police and fire personnel, educational and outdoor leaders, as weII as those working for utility companies, so the GPS technology can be used efficiency and enhance overaII safety. On behalf of the people of Nipissing-Temiskaming and all hon. members, I wish to congratulate BiII Steer on his exceIIent work, and would encourage anyone who spends time in the outdoors to buy a copy of What Do Those Numbers Mean Anyway?

I want to thank you for all the slides in the slideshow.  They were a huge help in preparing for the course.  I ended up with 10 students from our Environmental SHSM program and 1 fellow science/geography teacher.  We did the map work in the class from 8:30 until about 10:15 and then did part the 1st part of the test.  We then did the compass work (in class and outside) and set up the GPS’s for use.  We picked up subs and then Jason and I drove the kids out to the Northumberland Forest for the GPS section of the course.  We entered waypoints as they were read on the GPS (our location), from map coordinates (where we wanted to go) and went for about a 1.5 km hike, marking waypoints as we went and using the GOTO function.  I had made some larger scale maps of the fire roads at the north part of the forest with my GPS this winter, so we used these (with UTM grid added).  We then split into 2 groups, each with a ring of roads we had to stay inside of, and we set up a treasure hunt for boxes of cookies.  The kids recorded waypoints (and clues) and stashed them inside red film canisters which were left through the woods and left a box of cookies at the last point.  We then switched sides and had to follow the other group’s coordinates and clues to each canister and finally to the cookies.  We then used the route function with all the waypoints we used on our way in, in order to find our way out.  I think everyone had a great day and learned a lot.  We went back and wrote the test and course evaluation and cleaned up.  We were done around 4:00.

I was a bit surprised with the test results.  I ran the course with everyone working with a partner for the presentation, the practice work and for writing the test.  They also had Jason (a teacher) and I helping during all the activities, so the ratio was 5:1.  They did help each other out with test questions, but that was how you taught us and that was what it indicated we should do in the green binder.  However, I ended up with everyone getting 100%.  I don’t know if this is to be expected, but I want you to know that I didn’t give them any answers during the test.  If there is a problem with this, give me a shout.

Overall, I think that the kids both enjoyed the day and felt that they had learned something useful. I have 2 of them (both 4 wheeler ATV nuts) thinking about getting a GPS.  I know that I’ve greatly enjoyed mine (Christmas gift) all winter and can hardly wait until summer when I can really put it to the test!

Take care and thanks for motivating all of us to work to becoming GPS proficient.  When I’m up at Kiosk for my canoe trip this summer I’ll keep an eye out for you!

"Thanks for the help you gave me last Wednesday. I thought my Garmin wasn’t capable of working in UTM’s, but you quickly showed me that it most definitely can. We had a blast at our fish camp – we were able to read the topo and load coordinates for a lake that we wanted to fish and it worked!  I sincerely appreciate the time and courtesy you afforded me".
